It’s kind of exhausting and kind of exhilarating, but surely unique in a way that pangolins are unique (whether punning with those superlong tongues or not). And all this writer’s similes could turn smiling gurus into frowning nuns if it weren’t for the shear bombast, originality, and dedication at being the best similesmith in the smiling and frowning universe. Putting brass tacks on the track only speeds up the process. ![]() A compulsion, maybe, that can only tire itself with endless invention. It’s almost like when you trip in a pun marathon and can’t stop scraping your bloody knees along the Tartan track-you just keep on the fuck punning for the fun of it. Robbins dipped that implement in lead and swung it crushing to every clause with or without a purpose. Sure, I’ve read novels that used simile as a crutch, but Mr. I can’t remember saying that about anything else. ![]() Instructive, too especially since this is one of two works I’m reading as preparation for my own second-person novella. I’m not sure if this book had to be written in this POV, but it sure as hell makes it interesting. The fact that this entire novel is written in second person makes this line genius. ![]()

Musashi's great classic, until now unknown in the West except by reputation, is one which speaks to all three. Few works of literature speak almost equally to the businessman, the philosopher, and the practitioner of the martial arts. It instantly became a vital tool for assured success and has remained so ever since. The principles in this work are as true today as they were over 300 years ago, and are as valid for business negotiations as for hand-to-hand combat. A Book of Five Rings: The Classic Guide to Strategy. It provided insight into the then-emerging Japanese influence and offered a new way to think about business. He wrote A Book of Five Rings not only as a thesis on doing battle, but also as a way to approach and live all aspects of life-"any situation where plans and tactics are used." When A Book of Five Rings first appeared on North American bookshelves in 1974, its message took the business community by storm. Today, his philosophy is still revered by the Japanese and used as a guide for daily decision-making-and business strategy. This time she may get more than she bargained for.īone Crossed the fourth installment in the Mercy Thompson series was my favorite thus far. As a shape-shifter with some unusual talents, Mercy's found herself maintaining a tenuous harmony between the human and the not-so- human on more than one occasion. By night, she explores her preternatural side. By day, Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic in Eastern Washington. In a world where "witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people" (Booklist), it takes a very unusual woman to call it home. ![]() ![]() ![]() Those weekly strips of yours have a more traditional layout and in “See No Evil,” right from the beginning, you throw that out of the window. There’s more storytelling and more layers when you read them collected. When I collect the strips into a book I feel it reads a lot better. There’s an ongoing storyline but the strips work as individual gags or scenes. It’s changed more into this weekly sitcom, in a way. At first I tried doing the weekly stuff as this sort of basic one liner gag comic, but at some point I realized that I was allowed to do other stuff as well. ![]() ![]() I was given the opportunity to do one and I thought it would be really good practice and having the need to actually push something on a weekly basis and keep it going. I’ve never felt quite at home with doing weekly strips. At the time I was interested in Jeff Smith’s “Bone” and so Sing No Evil felt like getting back to my roots and my own way of storytelling. When I first started doing comics, they were all longer stories. Have you been interested in making longform comics? I know you from your work in the “Flight” anthologies and I know you make weekly comics in Finland. ![]() ![]() ![]() What follows is a breathtaking rescue, unlike any the world has ever seen. And oh boy, Will went from a responsible teacher who weighs all options and thinks things through before taking a decision to an immature and highly irresponsible 15 year old! Should I even start talking about bad parenting? No wonder Julia would’ve preferred Kel to be raised by Brenda! She acts so immaturely when it comes to her relationship with Will. And yet, she acts like a mature person at other instances. This book solidified my belief that Lake acts so immature sometimes. I didn’t like this as much as I liked the previous book. Lake and Will face many obstacles in their relationship, there are misunderstandings along with the added responsibility of being a parent to their younger brothers at such a young age.
